Welcome Message from Convention Co-Chairs

Welcome Message from Convention co-Chairs

Assalamualaikum wbt and Greetings!

On behalf of the Working Committee, we warmly welcome you back to the International Counselling Convention 2022 website which will be held in the beautiful city of Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia. We would like to apologize to our participants back in 2019/2020.  Due to the pandemic and movement control order in Malaysia, we had to make a huge decision to postpone ICC2020 to Year 2022 for safety reason. Though, we are still a strict SOP, we are allowed to organise a conference.

We would like to announce the new date for International Counselling Convention 20220 (ICC2022) will be 1st to 4th November 2022 (Monday to Thursday) at Riverside Majestic Hotel, Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia.  As for now, we are planning to hold ICC2022 physically.

The year 2022 is very special and meaningful to the counselling world! We have experienced a challenging situation whereby we need to adapt to the new norms such as working/studying from home, parents home-schooling their kids in a new blended learning setting, lockdown and quarantine, and the mandated by law wearing of face masks and face shields in public, not forgetting physical distancing to each other. The current situation has caused ripples in the personal, social, economic, and spiritual spheres.

This is the first collaboration between four gigantic organisations- Persatuan Kaunseling Malaysia Antarabangsa (PERKAMA International), International Association for Counselling (IAC), Sarawak State Government, and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS)- jointly together to organise the convention. The convention provides us with the opportunity for smart partnership and networking.

Our collaboration has been started back in 2015 where we bid the IAC-Conference in Verona, Italy.  We won the bidding to bring back the conference to Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia.  The announcement was made by the past President of IAC, Dr Dione Mifsud at the Seminar on Professional Counselling (ProCoun2016) at Hilton Kuching.   With the great support by Sarawak Convention Bureau (SCB), we managed to plan and organise such as a-future-prestige convention.  The IAC-Conference Malaysia has been rebranded to International Counselling Convention (ICC). This is because the convention itself has three combined big conferences names: Malaysia International Counselling Conference by PERKAMA International and UNIMAS, Konferens Psikologi & Kaunseling Perkhidmatan Awam Negeri Sarawak by Human Resource Development and Management Unit (HRDM), Sarawak State Government, and IAC-Conference.

ICC2022’s theme has been revised after the COVID-19 pandemic.  The new convention theme is Standing Alone Together: Managing the Paradox. This paradox is not unique to a COVID-ridden world; it is simply felt more acutely as a result of globally enforced restrictions. Many people have felt ‘alone’ in various ways throughout their lives when confronted with illness, tragedy, loss, hopelessness, humiliation, and other difficulties. In reality, they are not alone because others share their experiences, but not everyone understands that point of view. Sixteen subthemes have been carefully chosen to mark such a milestone of our counselling development. We are privileged to become co-chairs of this important convention.

We design an exciting program at this convention that will allow members and convention delegates to reflect upon and celebrate counselling accomplishments locally and internationally, renew friendships, extend our networks, and jointly explore current and future research directions. We hope that you will have a productive and fun-filled time at this very special convention.

We are now call for a paper and poster. Mark the important dates from time to time. Reach us out via our website at www.icc2022.my or Facebook: International Counselling Convention 2022 to check out the updates. You are welcome to write to us through email at secretariat@icc2022.my for any inquiries.

We are so excited to have you visit Kuching, Sarawak, MALAYSIA to participate in our prestigious international convention this year. Experience nature and adventure at the same time!

Thank you.

Dr Amalia Madihie & Riziandy Nawawi

co-Chairs for International Counselling Convention 2022 (ICC2022)

History

The smart partnership between two big and established counselling associations: PERKAMA International and IAC in collaboration with the Sarawak State Government and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) is a scholarly mechanism to promote education, practice, professional helping service and visibility of the important needs of counselling and psychology in developing community and nation to the optimum wellbeing.

Chronology of Engagement Between the Partners

2014

Persatuan Kaunseling Malaysia Antarabangsa (PERKAMA International), also known as International Counselling Association of Malaysia (ICAM) has initiated the idea to bid the International Association for Counselling Conference back in 2014.

An Executive Member (Sarawak Chapter) of PERKAMA International,Dr Amalia Madihie (also a senior lecturer at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak) has communicated with the IAC President to show the association’s interest to bid the IAC Conference to Kuching, Sarawak.

2015

The initiative has supported by the Sarawak Convention Bureau and Sarawak Chief Department.

A team from PERKAMA International, Dr Amalia Madihie and Mr Riziandy Nawawi from Jabatan Premier Sarawak was the representative for the Sarawak State Government, went to Verona, Italy and bid the conference.

2016

An announcement of IAC2020 Conference will be in Kuching, Sarawak by the President of International Association for Counselling (IAC), Dr Dione Mifsud, in the Professional Counselling Conference 2016 (ProCoun’16) in Kuching.

2017-2019

Continuous publicity at different countries through networks to universities, societies, NGOs and events.

2020

Sarawak State Government has played a big role in bidding the IAC2020 Conference to Kuching, Sarawak by guiding PERKAMA International to bid the conference. Nevertheless, the Sarawak Convention Bureau (SCB) too, assists on the bidding process.

A smart collaboration with a local university in Sarawak, which is Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) will be the Leading University as there will be a number of universities nationally and internationally will be the conference’s strategic university.  The conference will gather the best scholars in the counselling and psychology field around the world to speak on the best practice in the field.  UNIMAS will assist the conference on the academic engagements and as well the assist of organising the conference.

COVID-19 pandemic started…

2022

The smart collaboration in organising three events in Sarawak in 2022 -between Sarawak State Government, PERKAMA International and IAC- will provide a great impact on the theme discussion. Hence, a new conference brand title name has suggested: the International Counselling Conference 2022 (ICC2022).

With this, ICC2022 is back from the 1st to 4th November 2022, at the Riverside Majestic Hotel, Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia!

See you soon there!
